7 Steps to a Successful Enterprise Architecture with the Cloud

I read an interesting interview with the CIO of Salesforce.com this week. In the article, Kirsten Wolberg talks about Working in a Cloud. She’s asked: “What are you trying to achieve with your integration?” Her answer:

“Within our environment most of our integration is point-to-point. We aren’t using an integrated services bus, which gives us a neatness burden. As a developer I need to have more resources and spend more than if I could re-use some of the integration and more effectively manage in this space. And as we continue to bring more and more cloud-based providers into our environment, it provides a standardized and uniform architecture to bring those into the organization.”

This brought to mind a great session from Dreamforce ’09: 7 Steps to a Successful Enterprise Architecture with the Cloud. In the session, internal IT at Salesforce.com make the following recommendations:

  1. Define Your Architectural Principles
  2. Build Your Team
  3. Define Your Vision
  4. Choose an Architectural Framework
  5. Frame Your Pieces
  6. Communicate, Communicate, Communicate
  7. Start Executing and Monitor

Great advice from an internal IT team that is managing a 24 terabyte data warehouse. (Note from the interview: “That’s not the service. It’s internal IT. The customer service is part of the technical operations group under research and development. That’s just for IT.”)
